At the heart of every successful mining operation are individuals whose dedication and resilience help shape the future of the industry. This Women’s Month, SSC Group proudly recognises Sherné Mentoor, a supply chain and business professional whose unconventional journey reflects faith, perseverance, continuous learning, and a commitment to creating opportunities for others.
Beyond her professional role, Sherné is a mother, wife, lifelong learner, and woman of Christian faith. Her faith guides how she leads and approaches opportunities and challenges – teaching her humility, integrity, service, and perseverance. Her greatest motivation is her children, and she wants them to understand the value of education, hard work, faith, equality, and respect.
Sherné began her career in sales, operations, and business support roles at Telkom SA, Mpact Corrugated, Hertex SA, and ALC Corp. These experiences developed her understanding of communication, relationships, effective processes, and operational excellence, while sparking her interest in supply chain management and procurement.
She completed an NQF 5 Certificate in Customer Relationship Management in 2019, followed by a BCom in Supply Chain Management in 2025. She is currently pursuing her PMP certification and CIPS Level 4 qualification. Sherné believes education opens doors, but ethics, integrity, and performance determine how a person remains in the spaces they once studied and prayed to enter.
Mining had always been a sector she hoped to enter, although the opportunity seemed distant while she was living in Cape Town. When the opportunity arose to move into the industry in Gauteng, she grabbed it with both hands. Her experience in operations, procurement, risk management, supplier management, and business support now enables her to contribute through client and supplier relationship management. Her transition into mining brought moments of self-doubt as she learned new terminology, processes, stakeholders, and financial systems. The experience taught her that growth requires humility. Her faith, vision board, and focus on her goals helped her continue until confidence replaced doubt.
One of her proudest achievements is completing her BCom while raising a pre-teen, navigating pregnancy and birth, and enduring multiple hospitalisations. She recalls helping her daughter prepare for a school oral assessment, studying for examinations, and completing assignments from a hospital bed. For Sherné, the degree is a symbol of tenacity, perseverance, and God’s grace.
As a woman in mining, Sherné believes women bring resilience, adaptability, collaborative leadership, and diversity of thought. She is encouraged by the growing number of women entering technical, supply chain, operational, leadership, and executive roles.
Looking ahead, Sherné hopes to grow into strategic leadership, mentor young professionals, and establish a community training centre offering training and employment support to young people who lack opportunity. She believes changing one young person’s life can change an entire family’s future.
Her message to women considering mining is clear: invest in yourself, remain teachable, use your voice, and do not allow fear to stop you. “Be brave enough to take up space in rooms you once thought were out of reach”, she says, and “leave the door open for the next generation”.
For Sherné, being a woman in mining means turning opportunity into impact, challenges into growth, and success into a legacy. She describes her journey as unconventional and herself as resilient, purpose-driven, and faithful.
